#UMS2019 Day Three – Fill Up on Fun!

July 28, 2019 Off By Billy Thieme

It’s been fun, frantic UMS weekend, full of beautiful music, food, craft beers & cocktails, and new friends all around. And there’s still a whole day to go! No worries – we’re here for you. These are our picks for the best bets to wrap up your experience, and to make it even more unforgettable than it’s already been.

Here’s DenverThread’s final list of hourly picks for #UMS2019 – Day Three!

1:00 p.m.Ross-Broadway Branch Library

Kate Perdoni from Spirettes

If you’re not in love with Spirettes’ shoegazey etherial sonics, you will be after this intimate library set. Good with iced coffee, good with anything.

1:20 p.m.Showcase Stage @ Goodwill

Vic ’N the Narwhals

Groovy surf instrumental punk with a Latin flavor – the best way I can imagine to nurse a music (or other) hangover while you recharge to take on the rest of South Broadway UMS.

2:00 p.m.Denver DrumZ & Music

Plasma Canvas

This Fort Collins punk band brings old school straight up hardcore back to Broadway, sometimes channeling The Adolescents, sometimes Circle Jerks. Never quiet, never slow. Always thrash.

A Brilliant Alternative: Venus 305 – Skylark Lounge

The latest from the roots of Surf Mom, local punk princess Amy McGrath brings her own noise to the Glasss Records party. You won’t be disappointed.

3:00 p.m.Denver DrumZ & Music

Kinesics

A hint of Lucy Dacus comes out in Kinesics’ music, and a little mountain music openness – fresh, windy, catchy pop. This will be a prefect, intimate setting for this one.

3:20 p.m.Knockout Stage @ Punch Bowl Social

Bud Bronson & The Good Timers

By now, you’re ready for some straight up nitro-hyped rock ’n roll, and Bud & his boys are here to give it to you. Don’t be offended if they try to push the Coors Banquet, though – it’s their lifestyle, and it’s their time..

A Brilliant Alternative: Savage Bass Goat – 3:50 @ Skylark Lounge

Heavy, heavy bass & dubstep & thrash & noise fun in the afternoon – part of the Glasss Records party. Your ass will be flattened with this extra bass gravity.

4:00 p.m.Denver DrumZ & Music

Bellhoss

An intimate voice trails over stories of self-discovery, loneliness, eating, spying, naked bathroom discoveries. Sweet bedroom folk pop that promises to infect your eaworms with times they won’t be able to clean out.

4:20 p.m.Knockout Stage @ Punch Bowl Social

Jackie Mendoza

Mendoza brings quirky and ecstatic electronic pop from CA, floating sonic structures over Latin beats. In both Spanish and English, her songs explore love, relationships – wonderful yet so painful and confusing.

5:00 p.m.Denver DrumZ & Music

The Milk Blossoms

Get ready for a profound ix of hip-hop, no-wave, synth-ambient, and poetry. The Milk Blossoms remain undefined – maybe undefinable, but beautifully sonic.

TOP SECRET: Super Secret UMS Set 3 Kings Tavern

Who knows what beasts may take over the well-greased floors and walls of the world-famous3 Kings? Come by and see….

5:45 p.m.Showcase Stage @ Goodwill

Tess Violet

Impossibly cute. Incredibly cute. Maybe – just maybe – a little TOO CUTE. Try not to crush.

6:00 p.m.The Hornet

Tenants

Tenants blend post punk noisiness with newer melodies and intricate guitar work. Think Joy Division meets Tame Impala – though that’s just sorta ballpark.

A Brilliant Alternative: Rotten Reputation – Denver DrumZ & Music

Explosive and fun riot grrrl punk rock designed to make you men feel ashamed for this pathetic and idiotic state we’re all in because you’re so pathetic and scared yourselves. That is all.

6:20 p.m.Knockout Stage @ Punch Bowl Social

Y La Bamba

There’s no-one in the early 21st century USA playing anything like Y La Bamba, though you may find some similarities in traditional Latin music from 70 or so years ago. But it still wouldn’t be the same. Just prepare to be lifted up and wrapped in beautiful vocals and complex melodies.

7:00 p.m.Denver Distillery

Princess Dewclaw

All of your old favorite punk rock bands had kids, and kept them away from how all that punk rock went down the toilet, and then got all of those kids together to form this band. Plus video games. Go figure.

A Brilliant Alternative: The Amphibious Man – Hi-Dive

If you like horror, or serial killer documentaries on Netflix, as much as we do, try watching them with the TV muted and this band playing in the background. Even better!

7:30 p.m.Knockout Stage @ Punch Bowl Social

DBUK

Possibly one of the strongest, most consistently brilliant, and resilient groups of musicians in Denver came together under this moniker related to their favorite fall sports fan passions. Throwing around terms like alt-gothic, country death songs, black magic and such, alongside things like NYC No-Wave and Sonic Life will get you into the realm of DBUK for a listener’s perspective. Only seeing them live, however, will actually transport you to the true DBUK planet. This set will crown the UMS – you’ll be glad you stayed alive and conscious to catch it.

Another Brilliant alternative: There is none.

There is no alternative that will compare to DBUK. Trust us. Just go.

8:00 p.m.Hi-Dive

Porlolo

Don’t miss one of the pillars of Denver music. Erin Roberts has done as much to promote this town and its music as she has to create it. Beautiful, folky pop, intimate and charming, strange and endearing. Not to be missed!

A Brilliant Alternative: Dear Rabbit – The Irish Rover Pub

Anyone who can – and wants to – channel greats like Jonathan Richman, Lou Reed, even a tad of Can, and who does it well, deserves a ton of my love. And yours. Trust me.

9:00 p.m.Denver DrumZ & Music

Cheap Perfume

We can’t say enough about how happy we are to be seeing the true spirit of loud and fractious punk rock being carried and evolved (a little) even today. Add in the week-founded anger that we should all feel towards men, and you might “get” Cheap Perfume. If you don’t like this band, and what they’re saying, then you’re the problem. Not just part. The whole damned problem.

10:00 p.m.3 Kings Tavern

Los Mocochetes

Xican@ Funk outta Denver that fuses socially charged lyrics with groove and super high-energy antics. Experience something you’ve never seen before.

11:00 p.m.Skylark Lounge

Altas

Instrumental math rock ever felt – or sounded – so good. This is for the people getting off of work now, to give them a taste of what you’ve been enjoying all weekend. Give them a chance to taste just a little, would ya?!

12:00 a.m.Hi-Dive

Zebroids

At this point, it’s up to Zebroids to mop up – or keep you alive through your last round, or keep the universe expanding. Or all of these.

1:00 a.m.Hi-Dive

Ned Garthe Explosion

Thank God for the Hi-Dive. Or for Ned Garthe. Or for Guitars. Or maybe for pancakes, or Pete’s Kitchen, or the sky, or the swirling ceiling above me and the pounding kick drum that is my skull. Any way – g’night.

Threader

  • Billy Thieme

Aging punk rocker with a deep of all things musical and artistic, enough to remain constantly young and perpetually mystified. Billy has journalistic dreams, but of a decidedly pastoral, Scottish nature.
