“Head and heart in unison …”

As Kelly Lee Owens sang her brilliant song “On,” you could feel the crowd at Denver’s Globe Hall shine brighter in their hearts and heads. Looking around the room, the joy of the audience was demonstrated through head bobs, flowing dances, hugging friends, and a flat-out celebration in having an international superstar play to a select lucky group of fans.

Those fans included this writer who has played over 20 different of her songs in my power yoga classes. It featured some of Denver’s dance scene elders who were in the know even when KLO came through and played Bar Standard a few years back. For sure there were bass-heavy bros who went crazy when she dropped it really hard. And the sweet couples on a date that they will always remember. People were there to party and to heal at many’s first concert in two years.

… you could feel the crowd at Denver’s Globe Hall shine …

KLO offered healing passages through her music like the classic “Keep Walking” and “Re-wild” that led us into trance states of movement while we embraced with loved ones. Then she’d drop tracks like “Melt” from the staggeringly great album Inner Song that did just that to the crowd’s face.

In the great tradition of hard dance music, she delivered tracks that made our heads bang and our hearts full. An amazing feeling came from KLO and the crowd after we danced so hard to the stand-out track “Jeannette” that tenderly ended with a photo of her grandmother — the namesake of the song.

Owens was truly our guide to a space that amazing music can take us. She did it with top craftsmanship and care that is to be respected and appreciated.
