20-time Grammy winner Pat Metheny hit the Boulder Theater Thursday night displaying an amazing flurry of fingers flying up and down so many fretboards, and creating an unmistakably recognizable sound. Accompanied by accomplished musicians James Francies (keyboards) and Joe Dyson (drums), both of whom kept up with Metheny on every song, note for note.

Pat Metheny wowed the Boulder audience with the Pikasso guitar

Dyson kept the furious beat going, grounding the trio of lifelong professionals, jazz musicians who took their craft seriously, and it showed. Metheny played over an eccentric assortment of guitars – more than a few looked custom-made for him – and the most interesting one was the Pikasso Guitar. A custom 42-string beast that sounds like a variety of guitars, at one time it sounded like a harp, with its unique sound and look. It delighted the entire Boulder Theater crowd to no end.
