Cavetown – the moniker of Robin Skinner’s indie pop world, and the name they take on stage and, conveniently, also the name of the intimate, sparkling universe from which their bright, romantic, and ingenious bedroom-pop emanates – took over Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium last Monday night, to the delight of a packed house. Despite their small, unassuming stature, Cavetown came across huge in the doe-eyed faces of their hundreds of admirers, all rabidly following Skinner since the inception of his Cambridge-based video channel in the mid-2010s.

Their heartbreaking indie pop led the crowd through romantic, sad-eyed journeys into worlds of young, troublesome, and – sometimes – overwhelming love stories, full of growing pains and the wide-eyed world view of gen-z culture. Just a tiny bit reminiscent of early 2000s anti-folk like Moldy Peaches, Skinners hows what loads of talent – and even more charisma – leads to. Judging by the size of the audience, Cavetown has made their mark, and seem to just starting a beautiful journey with an adoring fellowship.

Ashland’s pop queen Tessa Violet opened for Cavetown, successfully warming up the crowd with her light-hearted, often humorous dancey pop. Violet appeared on a smaller stage in Denver’s world-famous street festival, the UMS in 2019, and gained a strong footing in Denver right when her breakout hit Crush was buzzing wildly. Her set at the Fillmore showed she’s gots a lot more to come, and her wild-eyed & adoring fans can’t wait to hear it. And she probably just made a lot more fans here in Denver than she already had.
